The Toronto-Based Company Combatting Period Poverty One Purse at a Time
Jana Girdauskas came up with the idea of The Period Purse non-profit in 2017 after she decided to collect personal hygiene products to donate to homeless people such as toothpaste, lotion, soap and menstrual products.
Now, The Period Purse runs regular product donation drives so that they can put together these “period purses” for those in need. In each purse, there will be a month’s supply of period products, underwear, socks, and sometimes, soaps, washcloths and wipes. Each purse also has a motivational note.
In its three years of operation, The Period Purse has served over 33,000 periods, measured by how many monthly supplies of period products have been distributed to date.
