In May 2019, California Governor Gavin Newsom announced a series of fiscal reforms geared toward low-income women and families, including the state’s elimination of sales tax on menstrual products. Elimination of this sales tax can help make a difference when it comes to period poverty.

Jennifer Weiss-Wolf said lifting the sales tax on menstrual supplies isn’t just a budgetary option, but a legal mandate. Menstruation impacts half the population for a good portion of their lives and having access to period products influences their ability to be productive students, employees, and members of society. Eliminating this sales tax on a necessary product in every US state is an important starting point for menstrual equity.
